Who's who in the last two? | September 11, 2024

I'll be upfront and say that the majority of my fortnight has been spent listening to MAJORDOMO by Teenage Dads. That said, I have ventured out and I'm prepared to give you my definitive list of the best new releases of the last two weeks (outside of Teenage Dads). Let's go!

Baker Boy - King

Talk about an epic pump-up song. If you're needing an energy hit at the gym, or just wanting to walk down the street with some swag; look no further than the latest from Baker Boy!

It's the first release in a couple of years for the Yolngu artist. The track itself is about his incredible rise of the last couple of years, and he has tried to channel some of that energy in this song - which he's nailed.

Royel Otis - Til The Morning

Does anything more need to be said about Royel Otis and this release? The duo just continue to smash it, and we're right here lapping it up.

This one comes off their debut album 'PRATTS & PAIN', with the video visualiser for the song dropping at the end of last week. The duo are currently enjoying life in tour in the United States before heading to Canada to complete their tour of North America. Tours to the UK/EU is also inbound.

Cheeky Leash - S.O.S

We had the pleasure of bumping into Cheeky Leash at a recording session at Jack Nigro's Sonora Studios a month or so ago, and we've been keeping a close eye on them ever since. As it turns out, the latest release from the Woollongong four-piece, S.O.S, was recorded right here on the Central Coast with Jack Nigro himself. You didn't hear this from us, but apparently some loose excuses were made to ensure they could skip work to continue recording with Jack.

They're quite fresh as a band with only four single releases available, but three of those have come in 2024 - so we can potentially expect a bigger body of work coming out before too long.

The Cat Empire - Blood on the Stage

I don't know how else to describe it, but this song just makes me feel good. It's the combination of drums, bass, guitar, and of course, trumpets that is so synonymous with The Cat Empire.

I've heard this song described as 'weirdly nostalgic', and I feel like that sums this one up pretty well. It feels like classic Cat Empire - thinking back to Hello of 11 years ago*.

Blood on the Stage is tken from their forthcoming 10th studio album 'Bird In Paradise', landing March 7th, 2025.

*how in the f**ck was this song released 11 years ago?!

Jet - Hurry Hurry

Speaking of nostalgia, Aussie icons Jet are back with a brand spanker! It's their first release since 2017's 'My Name Is Thunder', which itself was eight years after their 2009 album 'Shaka Rock' (which I had on repeat on my iPod in year 8).

Now, call me what you like, but the timing is perhaps a little coincidental. You may have heard of a small British band called Oasis, who themselves are re-uniting. Tour dates for Australia haven't been announced (and it's not guaranteed that they will), but Jet, your humble four-piece from Melbourne toured with Oasis back in 2005. The timing of this release has me a little bit suspicious...

Speaking of tours, Jet are currently playing a string of shows in Italy, the UK, and US to celebrate 20 years since their 'Get Born' LP.
