New music has been released. We have opinions. It's a tale as old as time. Read about and listen to our favourite recent drops below.
Sugar Soap - Living Uptown
In true Homebrewed form, we begin this article with a track that was actually released almost a month ago. Better late than never, right?
Darkinjung indie pop curators Sugar Soap have released their first new music of 2024, Living Uptown. This is Sugar Soap's second release since dropping from a trio to a duo last year, and they're beautifully refining their bright and catchy brand of indie. The pace of Living Uptown catches you straight away, and the boys have weaved in some fun lyrical deliveries and a boppy synth section that also warrant your attention.
If you listen closely and you're a resident of the Central Coast, you'll notice that Living Uptown is about an all-to-familiar story, with the band telling Homebrewed.au that this one is inspired by navigating days and nights out in the city when you live on the outskirts of said city. VERY relatable.
No word on shows just now, but we do have it on good authority that new music from Sugar Soap is coming very soon. Keep an eye and ear out here.
Teenage Dads - Spiders
Teenage Dads went and dropped their sophomore album MAJORDOMO last week, and there's no prizes for guessing our opinion on it. Over MAJORDOMO's 13 tracks, the Mornington Peninsula band skip away from any lingering doubts about their ability to back up 2021's Club Echo; delivering a fun, wacky and tight take on naughties Indie rock.
Of course, we encourage you to check out the whole LP, but Spiders is what we've got for you right now. This one is just oozing with fun - from the bubblegum lyrics, to the flute cameo, to the epic synth-led instrumental breakdown.
If you wanna catch Teenage Dads live, they've just kicked off an Aus/NZ MAJORDOMO tour. Details here.
Chymes - Voodoo Doll
Chymes has been flat out this year, stepping her brand of alt pop out of the dark and into the hyper with a host of new singles. Her latest release, Voodoo Doll, follows the same trend. We've also gained some clarity on what these singles have been building towards, with the Central Coast artist announcing her second EP, Alien will drop November 8th.
Voodoo Doll serves as an impressive bridge between Chymes' dark-pop roots and her newer sounds. It's as fun and catchy as we've come to expect, while lyrically exploring the terrifying excitement of falling hard and fast for someone.
No live shows are in the pipeline for Chymes at the moment, but you can keep up with her via her insta.
RVG - Don't Take it Badly
Legenary Naarm outfit RVG have returned with their first new music since their 2023 award winning album, Brain Worms. This is a two track release - Don't Take it Badly and a fantastic cover of the Ramones classic Pet Sematary.
Don't Take it Badly is jangly and honest, whilst carrying some extremely sing along-able energy. Of the release, RVG's lead vocalst and front woman Romy Vager explains “Don’t Take It Badly is a song about how change isn’t always a romantic thing and can sometimes feel pretty ugly. It’s a winter song that I wrote in the summer.”
RVG are kicking off a huge European tour in London tonight, so hold tight for local shows. Follow them in the meantime via their insta.
Juno mamba - Slow Dreams
Staying in Naarm, producer and electronic extraordinaire Juno Mamba has blessed us with a new seven track EP, Cold Rush. In his latest body of work, Juno Mamba again reminds us exactly how powerful and emotive electronic music can be.
The EP's middle track, Slow Dreams exemplifies this. It's light on drums, instead leaving much more space for Juno Mamba to build into a swirling, ethereal soundscape. The track also features a reimagining of the sample used for heavier purposes in the EP's opener, Undrcut, which is a neat conceptual link for the dedicated 'Mamba fans.
Now if you're to listen to one thing only from this article, let it be this: SEE. HIM. LIVE. Juno Mamba crafts an exceptional live electronic show. He'll be playing Tokyo Sing Song in Sydney this Friday night before returning to Melbourne for a couple more shows. More info here.
