Who's who in the last two? | April 24, 2024

It's been another big fortnight of releases here on the Coast and across the country, so let's dig into some of our favourites.

Chymes - UFO

This is the first taste we've had of Chymes in 2024, and this new single is a strong indication of her intentions for the year.

Hot off her 2023 EP Game Over, which followed on from her 2022 EP Karma, which followed on from her 2021 EP Hell & Divine - I think you get my point...

Chymes is as prolific and consistent with her releases as you will find across the country, and she's well and truly set the tone for this year with UFO.

The dark pop Queen of the Coast doesn't miss with another moody and catchy pop release.

Hey! Astro - Tell Me (cover photo)

The talented Coastie is back with his second release of the year - another pop anthem that I could picture on the Euphoria soundtrack on HBO.

This track has elements of Post Malone, Khalid, and Illy - which is a rarity to hear coming out of the Central Coast. We certainly would like to hear more of it!

Eves Karydas - Girlboss

Second release in 2024, and also the second since her 2022 EP 'Wide Eyed'.

Eves took a break from making music after that EP, and took that time to work on herself and how to finish up with her label. Now independent, Karydas is hitting us with some strong releases.

Girlboss is an anthem for people allergic to confrontation, who cry a lot, and who are often misunderstood introverts. It's also the first single of her upcoming album 'Burnt Tape' set for release on July 5. She'll also be touring the East Coast capitals in early July, including a stop ar Mary's Underground in Sydney on July 6.

Rum Jungle - Did The Morning Let You Down

The Newcastle band are back with another Rum Jungle classic!

Blending elements of surf rock with some 90's-infused solos, Did The Morning Let You Down is the first of a two-track release. They've also released a B-Side track 'Short Hair'. It's a bit more acoustic-focused and highlighting the group's range.

Y.O.G.A - Rodeo (feat. AViVA)

This track is very aptly named - you certainly feel like you're at a rodeo!

The sliding country guitar twangs are the cornerstone of the very catchy track.

If there's anyone who knows how to write catchy hits, it would be Reuben Styles - one half of Peking Duck and the brainchild behind his side project Y.O.G.A.

The Big Drive - Swim

One of our favourite acts to emerge last year are back with their first offering of 2024.

Swim is a half-paced rock track with elements throughout drawing from Birds of Tokyo, Eskimo Joe, and Spacey Jane.

Recorded at The Grove Studios in Somersby, The Big Drive are certainly one to watch as we continue through the year.

Honourable mentions:

Any Girl - Meet You Again

Chelsea Berman - Obsessed

CXLOE - Shapeshifter

Telenova - Power

The Rions - Sweet Cocoon

Wafia - Background
