Two weeks!! New music from that period!! Ahhhh!!!
Fletcher Kent - I'll Be
After some time away from releasing music, Darkinjung artist Fletcher Kent has reintroduced himself with a heart-filled, goosebump-inducing debut single, I'll Be. This release reads like a poem, but is delivered with a unique building and emotive energy. I'll Be is a deeply personal for Fletcher Kent, yet at the same time tugs at a pretty universal desire we all share to be better versions of ourselves.
And while you may have noted the word 'debut' to describe this release, Fletcher sees this period of minor rebranding and relaunching and as a case of evolution and not revolution for his artistry. He told us as much a couple of weeks ago on the pod. Listen to that episode here.
No confirmed shows for Fletcher at the minute, but we know for a fact that they're inbound. You can also vote for him to win a slot at Rolling Sets festival. Head to his socials to see how.
Meadowhip - Getting Messy (Acoustic)
Wollongong's self-described musician-poet-calamity queen, Cara Walkam aka Meadowhip has blessed us with the smooth and funky stylings of her sophomore EP, Inside Out. Despite Cara's own description of her artistry, this EP is anything but calamitous. Inside Out is a dreamy amalgamation of new music from Meadowhip and reimagined acoustic versions of songs already released.
If you're a fan of sweet and smooth R&B, neo soul and Jazz then do not sleep on this release. The EP's opener, Getting Messy (Acoustic) is a perfect place to sink in. Meadowhip's stunning vocals lead you through an all-to-familiar tale of sleepless, aimless and anxious scrolling. From the minimalist piano, drum and guitar elements and silky layered vocals, it's impossible not to get caught in the groove of this one.
No live show info for Meadowhip right now, but keep updated with everything via her website.
The Moving Stills - Telephone
It's been almost twelve months to the day since The Moving Stills dropped their breakout second album, Wabi Sabi; and as of literally a couple of hours ago, they're back. Telephone is the newest drop from the Central Coast outfit and it's the perfect blend of evolution and familiarity.
Telephone feels like a nod to some of the best indie pop sounds of the 2010's - think Two Door Cinema Club or Phoenix - but all wrapped up in the brightness that we've come to love from the 'Stills. They've absolutely nailed the pace of this one, too. Head-bopping and foot-tapping is almost a guarantee for your first listen.
Depending on your NYE plans, you might be able to catch The Moving Stills at Woodfork Folk Festival in Queensland or The Great Escape Festival in Tassie. Regardless, keep up with the lads via their website.
Montaigne - everybody else
Montaigne has gifted us everybody else - the second taste of their upcoming fourth album. This is some of the first music we've heard from Montaigne since they went fully independent last year in a bid to align their art with their values and politics (read about that decision here).
The frenetic electronic production of everybody else grabs you immediately as Montaigne explores the story of childhood pain endured in a generationally traumatised family. It's a deep and complex release, and you really should read Montaigne's postings about everybody else to understand it fully. Despite these complexities, Montaigne has managed to craft a unique, energetic and delicate release all at once.
If you're itching to experience Montaigne live, they'll be supporting The Script in the Hunter Valley towards the end of January. Keep up with them via their socials in the meantime.
Pepa Knight - Superman
We're sneaking this one in a bit past our own due date here, but please allow us to bend the rules for new Pepa Knight. The Central Coast artist - formerly of Jinja Safari fame - is back with Superman after years away from releasing music.
Whilst this is the first time we're hearing Superman, the track has been on a hell of a journey to this point. This track is the first taste of Pepa's Hypnotised Vol II EP. The precursor to this project, Hypnotised Vol I, was released a decade ago, and featured music largely recorded on a trip to India. Releasing the second volume was always the plan, but a destroyed hard drive and waning inspiration saw the other half of the project locked away, until now.
Superman is a bright and hypnotising return to releasing for Pepa Knight, drawing on Eastern influences and sounds of early psychedelia. Give it a listen and be sure to connect with Pepa Knight for more from Hypnotised Vol II in the coming months.
