The weather has been inconsistent lately, but the fresh Aussie tunes have been flowing. Read about and listen to our favourite new releases of the last two weeks.
Evie Irie - Laila
Central Coast's own Evie Irie is back with her first single since 2023, and it signifies the start of a new era.
The 21-year-old is best known for her upbeat catchy brand of pop, but Irie has gone back to her singer/songwriter roots for 'Evie 2.0' with her latest release.
The song was recorded in Sydney and written during the COVID-19 pandemic. It's a heartfelt song to her best friend after she missed her 18th birthday due to the lockdown restrictions. She's described the song as 'a birthday card of love'.
Evie is pretty tight lipped at the moment about 2025 and beyond, but keep an eye on her socials for what's to come. We'll also be releasing a chat we had with Evie in a couple of weeks, so make sure you're subscribed to our pod! In it, she talks about authenticity in music, how she's loving being back in Australia, and loads more.
Tommy Sexton - Start Again
If you like disco, funk, jazz, and a bit of everything in between, you'll wanna check this out.
Brisbane artist Tommy Sexton has dropped a two-track release 'Start Again' and 'La La La'. Sexton himself has described his music as "soul, disco funk, and post-apocalyptic yacht-rock”. I particularly like the last part.
In true artistic fashion, Sexton says that this song came to him while he was washing the dishes!
If you like what you hear, Sexton is touring the nation next month, including a stop on Sunday December 8th at The Caterpillar Club in Sydney with free entry!
South Summit - Currents
WA reggae-infused indie rockers South Summit have enjoyed a steady rise since bursting onto the scene in 2021, and the group have now released their debut album 'The Bliss'.
The album is a great listen from start to finish, but we're going to pick 'Currents' as a track outside of the single releases to highlight. It's groovy, catchy, and absolutely stacked with reggae swagger!
The album itself was recorded in perth and produced by Dave Parkin (Spacey Jane).
“Being our first album and putting everything on the table, the meaning behind The Bliss...it’s the diamond in the rough, It’s a story narrating how far we have come; we’re trying to bring that to the table and show everyone our musicianship, while having fun with it.” - Nemo Reuben.
Chymes - Celestial
We've said it a million times, but we'll say it once more: Chymes, one of the most prolific songwriters on the Coast, is back with yet another single!
You'd be forgiven for thinking we've already written about this song, but I promise you we haven't.
'Celestial' marks the final taste of Chymes' forthcoming EP (set for release December 13) and is another example of the blend of delicate yet powerful vocals, intimate lyrics, and playful persona she has perfected over the years.
"This song is about that beautiful feeling when you feel like you’ve leveled-up emotionally, personally, professionally and spiritually. I really wanted a song that celebrates where I’m at in my life, and acknowledges that feeling of magic and manifestation. It’s definitely the track you want to put on when you want to be in a good mood, remember your power and manifest your dreams!" - Chymes
Bliss n Eso - Feeling Fly
It wouldn't be a who's who article if we didn't include a new release from hip-hop heavyweights, Bliss n Eso!
It's their first new release since 2021, and ‘Feeling Fly’ is everything you’d expect from a classic Bliss n Eso track, with a 70’s era funk energy at its soul - an upbeat, infectious, driving beat underlaying Bliss and Eso’s trademark lyrical style.
Both Bliss and Eso have described their excitement to play this song live, so I'd be checking their site regularly for any tour updates!
