Who's Who in the Last Two | July 31, 2024

Yeah I know it's a day late. You don't have to bring it up every time we hang out. Like wtf. Anyway, it's all as relevant as ever, so feast your eyes and ears on our picks of the last fortnight* in Australian and Central Coast Music.

Joel Leggett - Don't Wait

Joel Leggett has featured heavily in our WWLT pieces lately, but it'd be remiss of us not to mention the recent release of his third studio album Don't Wait. So consider this a super honourable mention straight off the bat for Joel, and a reminder for you to go and give Don't Wait a listen right now. Don't wait. Seriously.

Porcelain Boy - Area 44

Now, we are well past the point of being able to claim Porcelain Boy as a Central Coast act, but I'm mentioning it here just so you know they at least USED to live in the area. Their latest release, Area 44 can however be described less ambiguously.

If you like music that deviates from the norm, then look no further. Area 44 is an epic from the Eora electronic punk duo. Production in this one is absolutely spot on - it's frenetic, dramatic and has you feeling like you're traversing dimensions. Jordan and Jordyn nail their respective vocal deliveries in this one, too. Area 44 is a super engaging release from Porcelain Boy and we're already hanging to see what comes next.

No word on live shows just yet, but keep up with the Porcelain Boys via their insta.

Darcy Piltz - Alcohol & Cigarettes

Budgewoi native Darcy Piltz is back with just his second ever release, Alcohol and Cigarettes. Recorded with Producer Nick Craig at Sonora Studios in Tuggerah, Alcohol and Cigarettes manages to be lovely on the ears while carrying a heavier message.

"This track is reflection on those moments growing up where you feel like you need to try and fit in. It’s also a nod to the social anxiety that you can have while battling through adolescence", Piltz told homebrewed.au

Much like his debut single, Your Friends Darcy Piltz wrote and recorded every instrument you can hear in this one. Save some for the rest of us, would ya.

If you wanna catch Darcy Piltz live, he'll be bringing the noise to Mumbo Jumbos on August 14 and Drifters Wharf on August 22nd as part of the Band Clash event. You can also follow Darcy via his insta.

Angie McMahon - Just Like North

Angie McMahon has hit us with Just Like North; her first single of 2024. Just Like North, McMahon says, actually belongs in the universe of her critically acclaimed 2023 album Light, Dark, Light Again, but didn't quite make the cut.

Revolving around the idea that we should embrace the uncertainty and disappointment stuffed into this life, Just Like North is one to pick you up when you're feeling defeated. McMahon says the single is actually a response to a poem, "It was written in a School of Song session led by Courtney Marie Andrews, who prompted us to respond in some way to a beautiful poem called ‘You Can’t Have It All’ by Barbara Ras."

If you're reading this from the US then you're in luck - Angie McMahon is midway through a huge tour of America. For those of us still in Australia, keep up to date with Angie via her socials.

The Ritzy Kids - Chemical

Central Coast pop punk quartet The Ritzy Kids have blessed us with an unreal cover of Post Malone's chart-topper, Chemical. If, like me, you love a cover that goes further than just a few tweaked notes performed by new faces, this will be up your alley.

The Ritzy Kids' reimagining of Chemical is exactly the thing we didn't know we needed. Hopefully it makes it back to the Postman himself. While you're in The Ritzy Kids world, be sure to check out their lat release, Reverie. The band are doing great things for pop punk.

No upcoming shows for the Ritzy Kids are listed right now, but keep up with everything to do with the band here.

Becca Hatch - Crash*

Becca Hatch has been carving out an enviable path in the Australian RnB scene over the last few years. What we'd seen from her so far this year had a distinct - and addictive - club feel to it. Her latest single Crash, however, is a little different.

Crash is a much slower version of Becca Hatch than we've become used to, but it's a welcome twist from the Eora artist. The four minute ballad creates a lot more space for Becca's vocals to do the heavy lifting, offering a glimpse into her range as an artist.

Becca Hatch has announced that her debut EP, MAYDAY is coming our way August 9th, so add it to your calendar and expect some shows to boot. Keep up with Becca via her socials in the meantime

*Look, to be completely honest, I thought this track was released in the last fortnight right up until a minute or so before I hit publish. I refuse to remove it and I will not apologise.
