New year, new music, same fortnightly wrap of new music that we think is really cool.
Miami Horror - REMEMBER
They're back! No joke, no drill, no January fools. We haven't had an album from Miami Horror since their 2015 record All Possible Futures, so please join in my elation that 2025 will bring a new album from the Melbourne electronic group.
So far, we've been fed five singles from Miami Horror's forthcoming record, We Always Had Tomorrow. The latest of which is REMEMBER, an exceedingly funky track inspired by the band's affection for turn-of-the-century disco and French house. Created alongside Canadian producer Robotaki and punctuated by the incredible vocals of Tim Ayere, this is a very groovy listen.
We Always Had Tomorrow drops February 28. Don't miss it. There's no word on live shows at the minute, but it's a near certainty that Miami Horror will be touring off the back of their album release. So keep eyes on their socials for all the news.
Zailya - Biggest Enemy
Central Coast singer-songwriter Zailya Kazadi has just dropped her debut album, Zailya. The album includes music written between 2017 and 2022 (she's 21 now - you can do the maths) and it was only last year that Zailya officially released her debut single.
Biggest Enemy is one of many highlights from Zailya's LP. This one starts slow and builds beautifully; drawing on lush, acoustic RnB stylings to explore experiences with anxiety and self-sabotage. It's catchy and introspective.
It is a mammoth achievement to have dropped a 12 track album less than a year into releasing music, but the feat will come as no surprise to those who caught our conversation with Zailya last year. So be sure to listen to that interview between runs of Zailya's new album. Keep up with her via her insta while you're at it.
Vexeora - Ain't Living to Compromise
This is a bittersweet one from Sydney band, Vexeora, who have gifted us an impressive four-track EP while announcing that this will be their last music as a group. Their EP, Bees In My Room, is laced with emotion and grit, exploring the band's experiences while living and recording in London over the last couple of years.
Ain't Living to Compromise really demonstrates what we're losing with Vexeora's disbandment. The lyrical delivery is a standout as this one traverses spoken word, hip-hop, punk and alternative rock in a touch over four minutes. Instrumentally, Ain't Living to Compromise is atmospheric and fairly minimalist, making for a track that is both muted and full of energy at once.
Vale Vexeora. One silver lining to this situation is that the band's three members will be forging on with their own individual projects. Head to their socials to follow their journeys from here.
Lucy Parle - Burn For You
There's a couple of tracks in this list that definitely weren't released in the last two weeks, but we're including anyway because we missed the back half of December on our Homebrewed sabbatical. Lucy Parle's fantastic cover of John Farnham's Burn For You is one such example.
The Central Coast country artist shines in this banjo infused version of the 1990 classic. Along with the banjo, there's some lovely mandolin and fiddle elements in the mix, while Lucy Parle's vocals are exceptional. Parle walks the line beautifully between keeping identity of this song while throwing her own fantastic country stylings into the mix. Farnham and country fans, unite.
No Lucy Parle live shows are in the works just yet, but they'll be coming. Keep an eye on her insta if you don't wanna miss an update.
Evie Irie - Alter Ego
Following on from her last release ‘Laila’, a largely acoustic pop ballad dropped in late 2024, Evie Irie returns now with ‘Alter Ego’, a dreamy, beat-driven alt pop song which exhibits a whole different side to the former Coastie.
Alter Ego is a track about finding balance between two drastically different sides of oneself and one’s life, ‘Alter Ego’ explores Evie’s experience of being torn between the two ways of being, but ultimately finding joy and power in them, and celebrating this contrasting self
We spoke to Evie towards the end of last year where she detailed some plans for 2025. Have a listen if you're interested!
