Avoca Beach Picture Theatre secures state grant to boost live music

The Central Coast’s beloved Avoca Beach Picture Theatre is set to expand its live music offering after being awarded funding through the NSW Government’s Venue Upgrade Grants program.

The theatre is the only venue on the Central Coast to receive funding in the latest round, which will see a total of $5.1 million shared between 39 venues across NSW.

The grants support venues with soundproofing, new equipment and professional advice to ensure they can host more live music without impacting neighbours, a move the government says will help create gigs for local musicians, strengthen night-time economies, and give communities more entertainment options close to home.

Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy John Graham said the program was about protecting the future of grassroots venues.

“Future stars will start out on these stages — these venues are a crucial part of the NSW live music sector,” Mr Graham said.

“Too many venues are under pressure from ageing infrastructure, noise restrictions and rising costs. We’re supporting them through those challenges so they can keep bringing communities together, backing local music and driving the night-time economy.”

Head of Sound NSW Emily Collins said the grants would make a tangible difference.

“These upgrades are not just cosmetic; they are the difference between a venue closing or staying open,” Ms Collins said.

“The program is about supporting local businesses, artists and audiences, and helping ensure a sustainable future for live music across NSW.”

The 2024/25 grants program has tripled in size compared to last year’s $1.6 million Soundproofing Grant Program. Of the total pool, $4.95 million is being delivered to 30 venues for infrastructure upgrades such as soundproofing, energy efficiency measures and new audio-visual equipment, while $117,000 will go to nine venues for access to expert advice and planning support.

For the Central Coast, the funding means the Avoca Beach Picture Theatre can continue building on its music offerings, giving local audiences more opportunities to enjoy world-class music experiences close to home.
